DIVISION RULES
Modified Games Program
There is a growing consensus that there is merit to starting youngsters off in a non-competitive environment that allows them many touches on the ball.
Objective
- Developmental
- 3-4 players per side
- Fun, Fairness, Safety, and Learning
- Teach Basics – dribbling, passing, shooting
Two fields are side by side (4 teams). Coaches work together instead of
adversaries. Teams switch fields.
No scores, no team standings. Emphasis is on skill development and participation, not winning or losing. (Accent on scoring goals, not preventing them. Don’t keep score so that team not worried about conceding goal. Confidence born out of playing without fear of failure.)
Cleats may be worn, but not mandatory. Shin guards are required.
Field Set-Up
- Size 3 ball
- 4’ x 6’ goal
- 20 x 30 yd field
- Sidelines, end lines, halfway line, center circle, "6 yd" box (4 yd x 3 yd). No "18 yd" box, no goalies. Use flat cones if lining machines are not available.
Game Time
- Instruction for 30 minutes.
- Play 2 games of 20 minutes each. Play 10 minute quarters with a 5 minute field switch/water break between games.
- Total – 75 minutes. No other practice scheduled for the week.
- 2 micro fields of 3 ¾ hours for 10 teams.
- Referee on 2 sides of field (Use coaches for instructions).
Team Format
- Play 3 v 3 (no goalies, 2 squads of 5 on one team of 10) substitution by either team on any break in play.
- Each squad should have a parent time-keeper/substitution (Coach can assign substitute rotations prior to game start).
Game Format
- Kick Off: Takes place at center at beginning of each half and after every goal. Take turns to start half. Kick off should be pass to a teammate.
- Throw-In: Takes place after ball completely crosses sideline. Throw-in should follow FIFA rules. If performed incorrectly, then child is instructed in proper technique and is allowed to re-throw the ball.
- Goal Kick: Takes place after the ball completely passes over end line after last being kicked by attacking team. Kick from anywhere inside "6 yd" box. Attackers outside "6 yd" box.
- Corner Kick: Takes place after ball completely passes over end line after last being kicked by defending team. Take from inside or along corner arc. Defenders allow at least 5 yards.
- Free Kick: Idea is that play/game is instructional and play should be allowed to continue. Blatant handball or fouling received a gentle verbal warning/instruction. Continued offenses should result in indirect kick. No penalties/No off sides.
- SPORTSMANSHIP: All players and coaches must end game with line-up for handshake/high-five.
